'Take a Bite' of the Solstice Blog Tour!

In Gavin Moxley's world, there is no thin line between right and wrong. In a personal crusade to help sever a line of disease carried by a clan of vampires; Gavin has no choice to be ruthless. The Vampires are purposely infecting the human population…waiting for humans to actively pass it on to each other. Gavin takes no chances and executes them one by one. Not strong or powerful, finding humans before they turn into full vampires is ideal and Gavin’s best bet.

Yes, this is Gavin’s life…

…And nothing ever changes it until a young half breed vampire with special abilities, Solstice, attaches and makes herself a fixture in his life when she asks for his help and protection and when a reluctant Gavin agrees he joins a dangerous game of cat and mouse. There is no safe place and the pair are constantly watching their backs. Torn between his hate and his love for Solstice Gavin is thrown into a moral dilemma that only he can figure out but two things are clear…

His faith and Humanity are being tested and the past is not always forgotten.
I have to say, I adore this new cover!
The previous one was just OK, but this is SO eye catching!

My Review:

SolsticeSolstice by Bryan W. Dull

Well, isn't this a pickle?  Far different than I anticipated, and so much darker... but still that humor I loved to help smooth everything down.

I have to admit, this book ended up being far different than I anticipated. I found the opening chapters to be dark and intense, but some unidentifiable thing just seemed off. The kind of stark intensity I think could have been taken to an '11' to really just make it start off with such a *BOOM* that the reader wouldn't stop from being entranced. While it was a kind of shock value that grabbed me (there was some vivid scenes that left me squirming), I wish it had moved a little faster or something during the beginning. It seemed a little different and set apart from the rest of the book.

I will say, I think I underestimated this book before I read it. I didn't anticipate how dark the horror was, or how funny the well-placed snark was. I was even taken by surprise with all the ways I thought this book would go, but then *presto chango* a whole different route than I expected.

I also found the underlying mythology to be unique compared to many books out there with the same theme. Bryan Dull really took vampires by the fangs and made them into something I haven't read before. That is really so refreshing to see someone take an age-old horror and put a new spin on it while still not glossing over the fact that they are, indeed, horrors and monsters.

My biggest reservations that lead to a 4♥ review, is the beginning scene, and the myriad of questions the reader are left with. I have to admit, those first pages were so shocking, and just downright bloody, I worried the entire book was going to be like the beginning. Initially, I put it down for a while, because I was worried about the entire book making me squirm while reading. I'm glad I was able to pick it back up and continue on.  But that reservation at my first attempt of reading still did stick with me somewhat.  Another bone of contention... that ending.  It left me feeling a little frustrated and wanting.  Nowhere near the cliffhangers of the Fever series, but still leaves you hanging for the next book on many levels.

So, if you like dark stories, vivid and sometimes bloody descriptions, vampires, and something just a little different, check this out. But please, continue past that first section to get a true taste of the book. It's definitely worth it.

I received a free eBook from the author in exchange for a review.

Breach (Breach, #1)Breach by K.I. Lynn

Holy freakin' smackity... I can't talk, I can't type, I can't express even partially about this book yet... It's like I'm in the middle of an eye of a hurricane, everything errily quiet but I know not far away, there is this whirlwind and all I can do is gape like a fish.

Ok... one word: Hot. No, Two Words: Hot and Wacked. Just the opening alone (pun intended) had me hot and bothered. It reminds me a little of Mystery Man: similar seemingly toxic relationship, I was shaking my head and waggin' my finger. I just wanted to help her find her inner Diva, and brush her hair and give her a hug. I went from saying, "No! He's not worth all this!" to "Yes, throw yourself at his feet, grab his arm, MAKE HIM really BE with you!"

The reason for all 5♥'s, beyond just sex, the characters. It does take a while to be let in behind their masks and roles they play everyday. Lying to the world, lying to themselves. Just after some of those peeks, I was caught up in the story. It was like a manic depressive wet dream- either fighting, or sex, or happy, or violent, or anything and everything in between. And it may have been a personal tragedy influencing it a bit, but I was bawling near the end.

Now, I'm not going to spoil anything here, but I can't lie. It's a cliffhanger. It's NOT a ride off into the sunset and everything is right with the world, and all unicorns and kittens and rainbows. It's cold, it's dark, and I don't know if it's going to come out alright. But, I'm not angry. It seems appropriate somehow, inevitable. I challenge you, if you're game, to pick it up and see if you'll join be at that edge waiting for the next part of the story. I'm smitten with these damaged characters, and I absolutely want more!

Abby Road: Sweet, but Wish It Went to an 'll'

Abby RoadAbby Road by Ophelia London

Solid 4♥'s.

First 30-50 Pages were a real turn off; after that it was quite engaging. I can't fully explain why those initial pages are such a turn-off, but they really were. I was actively fighting against the book in the beginning.  It's not like there was huge amounts of world building like in PNR/UF (this is a contemporary romance) but maybe it was even Abby herself that just soured me in the beginning.  While reading about 'stars' and rockers can be fun, this book does show the other side of the coin and the dark underbelly of fame.

Loved the male lead, but still don't fully understand his choices. Their (because really both H/h made wonky choices) odd choices really was the largest reason (other than the first few dozen pages) that this is only a 4♥ rather than a 5♥ read. Really frustrated at the female lead, Abby. Like beyond frustrated, I wanted to put a bag over her head and have a few rounds to smack some sense into her. Uber frustrated! Did NOT like her choices, her complacency, and how she always buried her head in the sand at what was actually going on.

I wish the epilogue was a bit 'beefier' and that the romance was steamier. Had either of those been upgraded, it might have won back ½ a ♥. I wanted to see more of the romance, more between the sheets, and maybe even (I usually don't say this) a little less realism.  Even in a 'real' romance I like to see some almost fairy tale love, or at least have a few more moments of 'melt' than I got.  To take a page out of Spinal Tap's book, I wish they had turned this up to an "11".  And a quick word regarding the chapter names, each a Beatles song. That, given Abby's personality and character, and how they related to that chapter- pure brilliance. Really well-done aspect of this book.

I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun contemporary romance with a little less kink, more vanilla, and a musical/celebrity vibe. It does fit that bill, and was entertaining.

Is it hot in here, or is it just me? ~ Alana

KISSING FIRE Teaser

Boy oh boy, was Preston hot. Make that boiling. Scorching. Molten lava kind of hot. Messy dark brown, slightly wavy hair that was not long but not short either. And, oh what a mouth he had. His mouth made me want to jump on board and ride that train for life. His lips were the perfect kind of full and every so often, he’d run his tongue across them and I’d automatically squirm. His face was pure angular perfection...high cheekbones with those slight hollows beneath them, that were the perfect shape to accommodate my lips. But those eyes...my oh my. They were golden brown, like coffee with lots of cream. I could only imagine what they looked like right when he was... Cheezits Ava, get your head out of the bedroom!
“Wouldn’t you agree Ava?” my brother was asking me.
I shook my head and swallowed. “I’m sorry, what did you
say?”
“We were talking about the weather here in the summer and I was saying how much more pleasant it is than in Charleston?”
“Oh, yes it is.” Was my voice breathy sounding, or was it my imagination?
Preston was wearing jeans that rode low on his hips. They were tight and he had a superior set of buns. What would I pay to see those babies?
“Ava? What do you think?” someone asked.
“Buns!” I blurted out.
“Excuse me?” Caroline, my sister-in-law, asked.
Holy Toledo, did I just say buns out loud? What the hell Ava!!!
“Fun! Anything sounds fun!” I quickly said.

“Ava, you look a little flushed. Are you sure you’re feeling okay?”
“Hot! I mean no, I’m fine.” I looked across the room and my face totally flamed. Everyone was staring at me. I had unbuttoned my blouse and was fanning myself. I’d noticed that Preston had a gloriously hot tattoo of a sideways cross on his arm. I think I needed to go home.
“So Avery, where are you staying?” Caroline asked.
“Oh, I’m at the Four Sexy. Seasons! I mean the Four Seasons.”
Oh dear God, I need to get my act together here.
